3rd Annual Prairie Spirit Trail
100 & 50 Mile Ultra Races
Saturday, March 28, 2015
Ottawa, Kansas

Welcome to the Prairie Spirit Trail site, I'm Eric Steele, founder of Epic Ultras. I ran my first ultra back in 1994 and immediately developed a passion for this sport and its colorful cast of characters who showed up to put their collective mettle to the test!  A year later I founded the Kansas Ultrarunners Society as a way to give other runners the opportunity to "go deep" and discover that "special something" inside of themselves that no words can ever really explain. Since that time I have personally competed in over 50 ultras and have been directly responsible for organizing and directing several more. In addition, I created and continue to serve as race director for the FlatRock 50/25K trail race in Independence, Kansas.  Our little gem is unarguably the most difficult and rewarding trail 50K in the Midwest.  After so many years of successfully putting on this race, as well as experiencing numerous ultras as a runner myself, I decided it was time to do what I love to do, on a greater scale.  So, I launched this company a little over two years ago to provide YOU, the ultra athlete, an opportunity to truly experience what so many have experienced over nearly the past 20 years at FlatRock - an ultrarunning experience of a lifetime!

With So Many Choices,
Which Ultra Event Is Right For You?

As an ultrarunner for over two decades, I understand what various factors go into planning your upcoming race schedule.  Distance, of course, is the first factor.  After that, there's a variety of other aspects.  Location. It takes money to travel.  Are you getting your money's worth from the race and does it sound like it would provide a truly epic experience?  Years ago, the selection of ultras was so sparse, your choices were quite limited.  With the explosion of runners in the sport and the onslaught of ultras to choose from - it's now more than ever, a runners paradise.  There are literally dozens of ultras happening all over the world every weekend of the year.  What you'll find with Epic Ultras Events is that we truly provide an unforgettable "ultrarunning experience of a lifetime" in addition to providing great value for your time and money.  And how is that?  We ARE ultrarunners, who, when selecting races for our schedule, know what factors drive us to choose one race over another.

This Will Be One Of The Most Family Friendly, Laidback Ultras You'll Ever Experience

The Prairie Spirit Trail Ultras are some of the easiest terrain you'll participate on.  This event has grown quickly in popularity as word has gotten out about the beautiful atmosphere and fast and flat course.  The Prairie Spirit Trail is a beautiful "rails-to-trails" course that runs through numerous quaint little towns. Runners will do an out-and-back, beginning in Ottawa, Kansas and traveling south to Iola (100 milers) or Garnett (50 milers), then, back north to the finish. The course is primarily on a crushed limestone trail, with asphalt paths as you travel through each town. Manned and unmanned aid stations will be approximately every 5 miles (with no greater distance than approximately 6 miles) and the course is easily accessible to crew at each manned aid station. Since it's flat and fast, it's a great event for first timers as well as experienced runners wanting to set a PR.

Some Of The Many Benefits Included:

  • Family Friendly Environment With Epic Finish Line

The finish line is in Ottawa, Kansas - at Celebration Hall (of course). It's perfect for runners' family, friends, crew and pacers to hang out, enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and cheer you and fellow runners on. Epic Ultra Events welcome the entire family out to our races.

  • Date Specific Shirt And Finisher Buckle

At Epic Ultras, we believe that date specific event shirts and finishers awards are "a must."

    • All date specific event shirts are gender sized and made up of a "super-comfy" tri-blend material (50% Polyester, 25% Rayon & 25% Cotton)

    • The finishers awards are custom/date specific buckles

  • Pre And Post Race Meal

We've always felt that having a meal at an event should be a time for each of you to reconnect with old friends and meet new one's. An opportunity for fellowship, laughter and ...okay...some of the best ultra food around.  Optional catered pre-race meal upon registration.  Post-race food provided for all runners.

  • Race Cap For A Quality Experience

As avid participants in ultras, we've always loved and appreciated smaller races.  The ability to connect with others at an event with a limited number of runners has always been a factor that's drawn runners to races.  Placing a cap on each race ensures a quality experience for every runner and the opportunity for you to truly enjoy the trail without the need to be constantly dodging other runners.  We've set the cap for this race at a total of 200 runners (both races combined).

  • An Epic Ultras Event Of A Lifetime

Many people have blogged about their experiences at Epic Ultra Events.  The universal theme is...it's a "Twilight Zone" experience.  Interpreted in today's times...it would, without a doubt, be an "Epic Experience".  All of us at Epic Ultras have a passion for this sport and helping other ultrarunners manifest an ultrarunning experience of a lifetime.

Join Us For This Unforgettable Experience!

What makes us stand out from the rest is not only the benefits outlined above, but our untouchable Epic Energy!  Our goal is for you to finish with an unparalleled feeling of accomplishment...a sense of overwhelming pride...knowing that you achieved your goal...crossing the finish line and receiving your shiny buckle!  We take sincere pleasure in having the opportunity to create this experience for each and every one of you.

"We Created Epic Ultras To Help You Find That Indescribable Place Within."

Our sport is more than just about running...and, if you're a seasoned ultrarunner, you know this.  It's about the way ultrarunning makes you feel...deep inside - what it truly does for you...how it takes you, in a sense, from one reality into another, as you travel along on your path and where you ultimately choose to let it lead you along the way.

Here's What a Few Ultrarunners Have to Say About Our Event!

"This Was One Of The Best Put On Races I Have Ever Attended. "

My husband ran and completed his first 100 mile race at Prairie Spirit last week.  This was our first experience with an ultrarace of this length and my first time to crew and pace from mile 50-75. I just want to say this was a great experience and all of those involved with putting on the race did a great job.  From check in to the finish line, we were met with smiles, a positive atmosphere, encouragement, politeness and organization.  Everyone at the aid stations was friendly and helpful, even into the wee hours of the morning.  Also, hats off to the photographer who did an amazing job taking some great pictures.  I love how the bull horn was sounded and cow bells rung for every finisher that crossed the finish line so every finisher felt "celebrated." This was one of the best put on races I have ever attended.  Thank you for making this such an amazing experience for all involved.

Janet Cantwell, Arkansas

"I Had A Blast"

Thank you SO much for inviting me out for your EPIC race.   I loved it and had a GREAT time.   You have something special going on there.   I am so glad I was biking that course and NOT running it.   Mentally that is a VERY tough race to run, SOOOOOOOOOOOO flat, but it was a VERY good thing for a lot of folks.   You put a LOT into the race and I could tell and so can the runners.    I had a BLAST on Friday night.

David Horton

"Truly Epic. In Every Possible Way"

Can't wait till next year. Count me in...To quote one of my favorite 80's movies, "It was a most excellent adventure!"

Zach Adams - Kansas

"I Certainly Got My Money's Worth"

Just wanted to thank you for a great time! It was everything we had hoped for and then some. I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for and I certainly got my money’s worth. Thanks again.

Eric Shebesta - Missouri

"The Race Management Was Beyond Reproach"

Thanks for all you have done to pull off the inaugural PST100.  It was a great event.  Although the rain and snowstorm turned this from one of the easiest 100 milers in the U.S. to one of the most difficult, the race management was beyond reproach.  From my perspective, the management of the race was flawless, the volunteers were right up there with the best of any ultra I have ever run, and the aid station service and selection left the runners wanting for nothing.  I will see you again for the 2014 PST100 and look forward to a much more typical Kansas spring day for the event.  With great anticipation for a more "relaxing" race in 2014.

Paul Schoenlaub - Missouri

"Phenomenal Event!"

Eric, phenomenal event yesterday. Course was beautiful, aid station volunteers were as good as anywhere, and challenges Mother Nature saved for us truly made this event "epic" by any standard.

Mark Berry - Kansas

"Perfect First 50 Experience"

Thank you for a perfect First 50 experience!  The free race photos are an appreciated and excellent value add to this memorable experience. Thanks again.

John Longan - Oklahoma

"Thanks For The Epic Race!"

Thanks for the Epic race! The weather made up for the flat course!

Gines Satchithanandam - Nebraska

"You Are All Amazing!!!"

I want to say thanks to all the aid station crews and anybody else out there supporting us runners you are all amazing!!!Thanks to Epic ultra for putting on this great event.

Jason Ryan - Washington

"I Rank It As The Best Run Of My Life."

Defiance. I like it. Old Man Winter, Mother Nature be damned. We, ultrarunners, guffaw in the face of your threats. We welcome, with open arms, your arsenal. To be continued...... But seriously, I rank it as the best run of my life. It was inaugural Prairie Spirit, my first 50M, the t-shirt had a beautiful quote in the back, I was surrounded by people who get it, and the weather was perfectly memorable.

Amber Lucian Tyree - Kansas

"My First 50 Mile Finish."

Heading to the airport after an Epic trail run. All the snow, although more difficult, added to the story of my first 50 mile finish. Thanks Eric and the entire crew. I had a great time.

Jason Beck - Illinois

"The Aid Stations Were The Best..."

I had a blast! The aid stations were the best I have ever witnessed for conditions like this. I will be telling every ultra runner how awesome this race is.

Donnie Dempewolf - Kansas

"The Spirit Of Family Between Everyone Was Inspiring."

I am amazed at each and every runner out there yesterday. The relentless determination. The refusal to submit. The spirit of family between everyone was inspiring. It was crazy out there but watching all of you made it more than worth it for me. It was a huge blessing for me to be involved. You guys are bad A$$ and I hope you have room for another nutjob :) You'll see me on the running the trail and slinging Heed and Ramen soon!!

Sean Hamlin - Kansas

"You Ran A Top Notch Race"

This was my first 100.  I think you ran a top notch race.  Everything was good.  I'm not sure if I could come up with any constructive criticism at this point (other than to add a few hills which we know isn't possible) even if I wanted too.  I appreciate your candidness at the meetings.  People that whine and cry about rules and the strictness of them should find somewhere else to go.  If they put on a race, they would understand for the need.  Thank you again for all you and your staff did.  Take Care.

Chris Cantwell - Arkansas

"Love The Belt Buckle!!!"

This was a beautiful amazing race...I hope you do it again next year!!! You did a great job putting this race on!!!! I am just happy that I survived and FINISHED!!! Love the belt buckle!!! It is what kept me going!!!!

Kristin Johnson Hoch - Kansas

"It Was An Amazing Experience"

I paced Carl Cleveland during last weekends Prairie Spirit 100. It was my first time doing anything like that and it was an amazing experience. I have written a blog post about it from a pacers perspective. I will be there next year for the 50 miler. Thank you for a great event!

"You Guys Rocked"

Good morning, PST peeps!  You guys rocked!  I wrote an Ultra Recap blog and then followed up with a recap video that my wonderful husband put together for me.  Had a GREAT experience!  Thanks again.
